SOVEREIGNTY

A fortnightly exploration

Over the next fortnight, we're exploring Sovereignty: the quiet return to ourselves. It invites us to notice where fear, guilt, expectation or old patterns pull us away from our own inner knowing, and to practise staying present instead. This theme explores self-trust, emotional orientation and the freedom that comes from becoming less divided from who we truly are.

Reflections On: Sovereignty

Sovereignty, for me, isn't a self-improvement quest. It's the simple process of returning to myself; of being orientated by the truth of who I am. It allows me to ask: Can I remain myself while I am in relationship with life?

Foundation asked what genuinely supports me. Agency asked what is mine to live. Relationship began exploring how I meet life itself.

And now Sovereignty asks me to explore how I stay present within that relationship; not controlling life, not disappearing into it and not defending myself against it.

Sovereignty isn't becoming more powerful or more defended.

It's becoming less divided from yourself.

Yesterday, my daughter asked me for something that made me feel uncomfortable in myself. I saw the pattern almost immediately.

Fear was triggered: the fear of making the wrong decision.

And from there came the familiar spiral into analysis and overthinking.

I become overwhelmed and indecisive.

I lose the naturalness of my response. Instead of responding from myself, I begin reacting from fear.

And that takes me out of balance.

Sovereignty, in that moment, was seeing the fear and choosing not to let it decide for me.

It meant retreating for a while and looking within.

Allowing myself to navigate the discomfort from my own internal knowing.

Orientating myself again.

Later, I was able to respond honestly in a way that kept the dialogue open.

Nothing dramatic had happened.

I had simply returned to myself before answering.

Perhaps that is what sovereignty looks like in ordinary life.

Not certainty.

Not perfect decisions.

Not never feeling fear.

But recognising when fear has pulled us away from ourselves and knowing how to return.
